I left the office a little early to arrive at the hospital within the Doctorâs timings. Once there, I walked into his room, and just as before, without asking if the medicine helped or not, he asked me another strange question, âWhat does the world look like to you?â
âConfusing and perhaps disturbing. Why did you ask this question, Doctor?â
He scoffed, âNo, nothing!â
Actually, he didnât feel normal to me at all. But I still had to try this out.
He asked, âWhat is the first thought that comes to your mind?â
I replied, âHow do you wake up someone who is trapped in limbo?â
He looked at me with a strange expression and said, âSome trauma in your past caused your psyche to split. We must get to the root of this trauma. Remember your earliest memory! You just created a bad story in your mind to get away from everything just so it doesnât end worse like some other things from your past. Traumas from your childhood that you ignored till now. They all came up together. Because someone was there to repeat everything bad that happened with you in a certain fashion.â
âAnd what about those dreams of the girl that I get?â
âThey are just dreams. Thatâs what science says.â
âThe wounds on the body aren't the only wounds, Doctor. Some internal scars are so painful that nothing can compare to them. I want to rid myself of these memories that are not mine.â
âYes, child, your dreams can be a manifestation of your emotions.â
âI don't even know why this must happen to me!â
âYou are just a sad little boy trying to quiet the ghosts of the past.â
âDonât you have something that can erase all these memories? So that I donât think about them at all. It will help me become a better person.â
âYou can't erase memories forever! It would be like erasing time itself. Memories and time go hand in hand. The consequences would be even devastating than Alzheimer's disease: there would be no separation between pre and post-trauma, the memories would wander autonomously in search of answers, for common ground. But I want you to forget your past that you made in your mind, whatever you have said to me! And to help you do that I will conduct a hypnosis session right now.â
He gave me Sodium Thiopental for inducing hypnosis. He then put a mask over my face and dropped a few drops of a liquid that made me asleep.
âThis is to calm your nerves. Now focus on your earliest memory and keep on doing that.â
I tried to remember my earliest memory from my childhood.
He whispered, âYou are falling slowly, very slowly, into a deep sleep. You get out, and you see a door. Do you want to open it?â
âNo. I don't want to open it.â
âWhy not?â
âI feel like something scary will jump out at me.â
âGo ahead. Open the door. What do you see? Tell me what it is. Where are you right now?â
âPeople. An old town. A house where no one lives.
